A course for drummers who would like to gain an in-depth knowledge of jazz drumming concepts and techniques. The emphasis is on practical skills and each participant will get to apply some of the course material in a piano trio setting.
- Arrival/induction: Wednesday 19th July at 10 am.
- Classes run from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm every day with a one hour lunch break.
- Course ends Saturday 22nd July at 4.30pm.
- Developing a good sound and feel on the ride cymbal.
- Triplet based and straight eighths grooves.
- Latin grooves
- Practical application of sticking and rudiments.
- Interpreting lead sheets and drum charts.
- Analysis of jazz drumming styles with a historical perspective.
- Solo analysis of the great jazz drummers. Constructing 4, 8 and 32 bar solos.
- Metric modulation concepts.
- Discussion of equipment, sound and tuning.
- Specifics of big band drumming.
- Practice techniques.
